William gave his occupation as Labourer when he enlisted 3 November 1915 at Cootamundra and his next of kin his mother Emma Lovett of Lithgow.

He served in the 29th Battalion and 2nd Machine Gun Battalion A.I.F. He departed Sydney on the 'Wiltshire' 22 August 1916 and arrived France via England December 1916.

Private William BURROUGH was wounded in action (shrapnel wound right thigh) France 20 September 1917. He was wounded in action again (shrapnel wound calf) France 16 May 1918. William was killed in action in France on 2 September 1918 age 23.
